Cloudfall

 

Finding a name for the white blend to accompany the Gentle Giant, proved unexpectedly difficult. The mountain silhouette on the label remained the natural starting point, while many possibilities were inspired by the landscape surrounding Haut Espoir.

The name finally revealed itself through an article by Professor Izak Rust, then a long-time resident of the valley, describing the remarkable weather phenomenon often seen over the Franschhoek mountains, particularly Franschhoek Peak: an orographic cloud formation resembling a cascading waterfall of cloud.

“Cloudfall” felt instantly fitting, both for the mountain that inspires the label and for Rob’s deep fascination with clouds and weather, a passion later shared by his son.

A much-loved wine inspired by mountain skies, movement, and the ever-changing beauty of the valley.
